In the winter, they go to Hawaii or Mexico to breed. Until now, scientists believed that these two places were their main meeting points with the opposite sex. But the whistles and songs of distant whales revealed a little more information. 26,000 images have been thoroughly checked.

The color of the whale's skin and the stripes on the tail give it an individual identity. The researchers then used software to identify two whales in the same winter breeding season that flew to Hawaii and from there to Mexico. One male whale traveled 4,545 km, which took 53 days. First, the narwhal went to the Hawaiian island of Oluwalu, where he spent some time with the herd.

He then stayed on the Mexican island of Clarion with three whales. The second was probably a male whale that in 2018 traveled 5,944 km in 49 days to Mexico and then to the Awau Channel in Hawaii. Here, seven male whales attempted to mate with one female and seduced her. In the summer, these two whales were also spotted in Canada and Alaska. Experts have proven that not only male but also female whales travel long distances in the seas. According to scientists, whales can cover a distance of four kilometers in an hour.
